Black man hugs neo-Nazi skinhead during Florida protests

GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES (OCTOBER 19, 2017) (ADAM SAMEI) – A black man confronted a neo-Nazi skinhead and hugged him during an anti-fascist rally at Florida University to denounce a speech by the alt-right leader Richard Spencer on Thursday (October 19).

A video uploaded by Adam Samei showed the moment a white man wearing a shirt printed with swastikas is confronted by a black man, identified by local media as Aaron Alex Courtney. Courtney asked the man “Why don’t you like me? What is it?” as he proceeds to hug him.

Samei told Reuters the white supremacist walked into the anti-fascist rally, with some in the crowd attacking him before Courtney confronted and embraced him. Samei, a postgraduate student at University of Florida, thinks the strongest message is “the fact that someone was able to show love in the face of hatred.”

Richard Spencer’s event at the University of Florida in the Gainesville campus, came about two months after rallies held by neo-Nazis and white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, that led to a deadly clash with counter-protesters.
