(CBS News, Reuters) – Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort entering an FBI field office in Washington, D.C. Monday.

The images coming after the New York Times and CNN reported Manafort and one of his aides was told to surrender to federal authorities.

Reuters has learned that the first criminal charges could be unsealed today stemming from a probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

In July, FBI agents raided Manafort’s Virginia home. His financial records, real estate dealings, and prior work for pro-Russian political parties are being investigated by special counsel Robert Mueller.

The former FBI director is probing allegations Russia meddled in the 2016 election.

U.S. intelligence agencies concluded in January that Moscow tried to sway the presidential race toward Republican candidate Donald Trump.

The spy services say Russia did so by hacking Democratic e-mails and releasing the communications to embarass Trump’s rival, Hillary Clinton.

Mueller is looking into whether anyone on the Trump campaign may have cooperated with Russian agents in this effort.

He’s also looking into the financial and professional ties of those who came into contact with the Trump campaign.

The New York Times reported Manafort has been under investigation for violating federal tax laws, money laundering, and whether he correctly registered as a foreign lobbyist.

Russia denies interfering in the U.S. election. Trump has called allegations of collusion a “witch hunt.”
