LONDON, ENGLAND, UK (FILE – SEPTEMBER 12, 2015) (UK POOL) – A socialist stalwart, Corbyn assumed his Labour Party’s leadership mantle in September 2015 after a campaign that largely framed him as a left-wing foil to then Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron.
While both men had put hardline reform of Britain’s relationship with the EU at the centre of their platforms, they also campaigned for the United Kingdom to stay within the union.
The Conservative Party is around 20 points ahead of Labour, a large lead for an incumbent party two years after the last parliamentary election.
The prime minister’s own personal ratings also dwarf those of Corbyn, with 50 percent of those asked saying she would make the best prime minister. Corbyn wins only 14 percent, according to pollster YouGov.
However, before holding the election, May must first win the support of two-thirds of the parliament in a vote on Wednesday (April 19). Labour said it will vote in favour of a new election, meaning she should be able to get it through.
