Obama on Trump: “Outrageous attacks have become far too commonplace”

(EBC) – United States President Barack Obama on Monday criticised comments by Republican candidate Donald Trump about war veteran John McCain, saying presidential debates deserve better than that.

McCain, a Navy fighter pilot, was imprisoned and tortured in a Hanoi prison for five years during the Vietnam War after being shot down.

Trump has drawn fire for telling an audience in Iowa that McCain was “not a war hero,” and got that distinction only because he was captured, although he later softened his remarks.

At a news conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Obama said, “In eighteen months I’m turning over the keys. I want to make sure I’m turning over the keys to somebody who is serious about the serious problems that the country faces and the world faces.”
