This bodycam footage shows Patrick Harmon moments before he was shot and killed by a Salt Lake City police officer.
It’s the latest police-involved shooting of a black man to spark a public outcry.
Authorities say the officer stopped Harmon for riding his bicycle across six lanes and a median on the evening of August 13th.
The officer says Harmon did not have a red tail light as required.
According to the district attorney, the officer called for backup after Harmon gave several different names when asked for his identification.
The officer arrested him after learning Harmon had active felony warrants for his arrest.
That’s when bodycam video shows Harmon breaking free and running away.
The officer opened fire, killing him.
The district attorney says he will not file criminal charges saying the shooting was justified because Harmon threatened the officer with a knife.
SIM GILL, SALT LAKE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY,
“The officers heard: ‘I’m going to cut you, I’m going to stab you’ and the officer in question -who used lethal force- uh uh saw what he believed to be a knife.”
Harmon’s older sister says her brother suffered from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and was possibly homeless.
His death prompting protests…and coming amid heightened scrutiny after the killings of numerous unarmed black people by police in the U.S.
