Four cops in four cities shot in one day

Four police officers across the U.S. have been shot in a span of just 24 hours. Linda So reports.

(CBS / SAN ANTONIO POLICE DEPARTMENT) – The manhunt is intensifying for the suspect who shot and killed Detective Benjamin Marconi in San Antonio, Texas.

Police released this image of a person of interest.

Witnesses say Marconi, a 20-year veteran of the force, was sitting in a squad car, writing a ticket during a routine traffic stop outside police headquarters on Sunday.

The suspect pulled up behind Marconi, walked up to the patrol car, and opened fire in a seemingly unprovoked attack.

SOUNDBITE: CHIEF WILLIAM MCMANUS, SAN ANTONIO POLICE DEPARTMENT, SAYING:

“The suspect reached the driver side door he fired a gunshot toward Detective Marconi striking him in the head.”

Hours later in Missouri, a St. Louis police officer was shot in the face and critically wounded as he sat in his cruiser at an intersection.

Police say it was an ambush.

SOUNDBITE: CHIEF SAM DOTSON, ST. LOUIS POLICE DEPARTMENT, SAYING:

“The officer says he saw the muzzle flash and felt the window breaking as the shots came through and hit him in the head.”

A second Missouri officer was shot in the face in Gladstone, a suburb of Kansas City during a traffic stop.

The police sergeant is expected to survive. Authorities say the suspect was later killed in a shootout with police.

And in Sanibel, Florida, police say an officer was shot in the shoulder while sitting in his car during a traffic stop.

The officer was treated at the hospital and released.

The suspect barricaded himself in his home and was later taken into custody.
