Congo controversially elected to U.N right council, despite abuse record

Critics of President Joseph Kabila’s government are challenging the election of the Democratic Republic of Congo to the 47-member Geneva-based council. The country – beset by renewed political and militia violence since Kabila refused to step down in December – won 151 votes. US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley said Congo’s election harmed the credibility of the body.

Congo ban on non-biometric passports sparks outcry

Democratic Republic of Congo’s decision to ban semi-biometric passports by October 16th has sparked criticism with many saying they were not given sufficient time to prepare for new passports. The new passports are among the most expensive in the world and a Reuters investigation showed that one-third of the sticker price goes to a company believed to be controlled by a close relative of President Joseph Kabila.

Rwanda’s top court clears way for Kagame third term

Rwanda’s Supreme Court ruled to lift a constitutional two-term presidential limit following a petition by the ruling RPF to extend long-time President Paul Kagame’s time in office. The ruling is likely to draw attention to a host of other African leaders, from Congo Republic’s Denis Sassou Nguesso to DRC’s Joseph Kabila who are trying to do the same.
