Nelson Piquet, Jr claims win at the Formula E Long Beach ePrix in California.
LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES (APRIL 4, 2015) (FORMULA E HOLDINGS)- Nelson Piquet, Jr raced to a win at the Formula E Long Beach ePrix Saturday (April 4) afternoon, 35 years after his father won a Formula One race on the same track.
Piquet, Jr, who qualified his China Racing team number 99 car in fourth place, overtook polesitter and e.dams Renault driver Sebastien Buemi going into the first corner and never looked back, holding the lead for the majority of the 39 laps.
Former Formula One drivers Jean-Eric Vergne and Lucas di Grassi took the final two podium spots with Vergne piloting his number 27 Andretti team car to second place and number 11 Audi Sport Abt driver di Grassi placing third.
The third place finish moved di Grassi into the top spot in the Formula E overall season standings with 75 points to Piquet, Jr’s 74 points and e.dams Renault driver Nicolas Prost’s 69 points.
Held on March 30, 1980 at a similar Long Beach track, the Formula One United States West Grand Prix was won by Nelson Piquet senior in a Brabham-Ford BT49 that was powered by a Ford Cosworth V8 gasoline engine.
The all electric car series now heads to Monaco for the seventh race of the inaugural Formula E season on May 9.
