Pope Francis greeted by tens of thousands in Fatima

FATIMA, PORTUGAL (MAY 12, 2017) (POOL) – Pope Francis was greeted by tens of thousands of worshippers when he arrived in Fatima on Friday (May 12) where he will make saints of two Portuguese shepherd children who are believed to have seen apparitions of the Madonna 100 years ago.

The canonisation of siblings Francisco and Jacinta will take place on Saturday (May 13) in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima where the apparitions are believed to have taken place. A million worshippers are expected to witness the event.

After driving through the streets of Fatima in the pope mobile, the pontiff will lead a prayer at the Fatima shrine on Friday evening.

The Catholic Church posthumously confers sainthood on people considered so holy during their lives that they are now believed to be with God and can intercede with him to perform miracles. Francisco and Jacinta are attributed the miracle of curing a 5-year-old Brazilian boy from a severe head injury sustained after falling from a 6.5 metre-high window.
