BEIJING, CHINA (RECENT – MARCH 17, 2017) (REUTERS) – What do you get when you fuse two of the globe’s most popular fast food items – China’s a baozi, a steamed bun usually filled with meat, and the pizza? The answer: Baozza.
It’s a steamed bun filled with cheese and pizza topping that’s been developed by Alex Cree, U.S. expat who quit his consulting job to bring this new snack to the masses.
The inspiration struck Cree while he was on a business trip to Guangdong.
Back in the U.S. Cree began experimenting with different recipes for the snack, and eventually decided to take the plunge, quitting his job and moving to China in 2016.
The current recipe has the doughy casing as a combination of the traditional baozi dough, with the addition of italian herbs and cheese. The interior is a combination of cheese, tomato and pizza toppings.
Cree started an online delivery joint in the basement of a shopping mall and began promoting his creations at publicity events across the city.
But is the creation’s cheesy interior and meaty flavours something that can break into the mainstream baozi market? We subjected the baozza to the ultimate test, a critique by a typical baozi seller, Zhan Mimi. She and her family do a roaring trade running a baozi stand just around the corner from the city’s west station.
Sadly she was not very convinced.
