Celebrities turn to Twitter during Trump inauguration

Celebrities including Alicia Keys, Katy Perry and Steven Seagal react on Twitter to Donald Trump’s inauguration.

WASHINGTON, D.C., UNITED STATES (JANUARY 20, 2017)(RESTRICTED POOL) – Celebrities took to Twitter on Friday (January 20) to react to the inauguration of the United States’ 45th president, Donald Trump.

R&B singer Alicia Keys tweeted “Americans are all colors, faiths, cultures & genders. We have voices. We refuse fear. We believe in the dream.”

Comedian Sarah Silverman joked “this is the most I’ve ever heard the words Jesus Christ and the most I’ve ever said the words Jesus Christ.”

Comedian and TV presenter Chelsea Handler called for Trump to be exchanged for Mexican drug lord “El Chapo.”

“In exchange for El Chapo, we would like to hand over Donald Trump. #Freetrade. #Inauguration,” Handler tweeted.

Aerial pictures of the crowds of Trump supporters on the Mall showed a much smaller turnout at midday on Friday than that in comparable photos from Obama’s first inauguration in 2009.

“#ThankYouObama! Unemployment so low no one had time to go to the inauguration,” joked singer John Legend about the low turnout.

Estimates of Friday’s crowd size were not immediately available from police.

Actor Steven Seagal, who recently became a Russian citizen, was one of the few celebrities to tweet words of support for Trump.

“Congratulations to President Donald Trump! Wonderful speech! Sp grateful & proud to finally have a president the people! @realDonaldTrump,” he tweeted.

Trump took power as the 45th president and pledged to end what he called an “American carnage” of rusted factories and crime in an inaugural address that was a populist and nationalist rallying cry.

With Obama and three other former presidents sitting nearby, Trump accused previous U.S. administrations of enriching Washington at the expense of struggling American families.
