‘Annabelle’ sequel scares off competitors with $35 million debut

(WARNER BROS.) – Warner Bros.’ horror film “Annabelle: Creation”, a prequel to the 2014 ‘Annabelle’ and the latest in the Conjuring film series, made a $35 million debut to top the weekend box office in North America.

Christopher Nolan’s World War 2 epic “Dunkirk” added another $11.4 million dollars to its earnings, topping $150 million dollars domestically.

Animated sequel “The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature” from Open Road Films raked in $8.9 million dollars on its opening weekend.

In its second week, Stephen Kings’ “The Dark Tower” starring Matthew McConaughey brought in $7.87 million at the box office.

Rounding out the top five, Sony’s “The Emoji Movie” brought in an estimated $6.6 million.
