FRANKFURT, GERMANY (SEPTEMBER 12, 2017) (REUTERS) – Germany’s BMW unveiled gleaming new models at Frankfurt motor show on Tuesday (September 12), including the i Vision Dynamics electric coupe – a new four-door electric car positioned between the i3 city car and the i8 hybrid sportscar.
The automaker is launching 12 new energy-efficient cars in Frankfurt this year, as growing restrictions and charges for diesel and gasoline vehicles are spurring the rise of electric cars.
But for Greenpeace demonstrators outside the venue, the switch to electomobility is not fast enough. Activists staged a protest centred around a fume-spewing combustion engine and demanded a “radical” change in direction away from petrol and diesel cars.
BMW said last week it was now readying its factories to mass produce electric cars by 2020 if demand for battery driven vehicles takes off. But analysts say big investments in charging points and power networks will be needed to serve a mass market.
